Lea, when I had my wee ones, I, and I mean they, loved a car set I got them. Each track piece was a letter of the alphabet that fit into another letter. There were bridges you could put up, houses, signs, etc. and the little cars would travel through the zigzag of the z, the curl of the c, the mountains of the m, the ... well, you get it. It was great fun. Thing was - I could never complete the track with all 26 letters. No matter how I connected the letters, there was always one left out.
